Putting neurology on the map: patient groups and industry working together

by MHP Communications for Neurological Alliance

Summary of work

There are an estimated 12.5 million neurological cases in England. Despite their prevalence, and both the National Audit Office and the Public Accounts Committee highlighting the human and economic cost associated with neurological conditions, neurology has long been under-prioritised.

As the collective voice for over 80 neurological patient organisations, the Neurological Alliance (the Alliance) identified the need to address this issue, which was in part due to the lack of available and reliable neurology data and the poor understanding among policymakers of the burden of neurological conditions.

Taking action, the Alliance undertook a collaboration with a new industry reference group (IRG). The aim was twofold: support a stronger voice for neurology; and drive change via a strategic, targeted, public affairs programme.

The results speak for themselves. Two years on from the Alliance augmenting its work through this collaboration, the neurological community has seen the appointment of the first National Clinical Director for Neurological Conditions; the launch of the Neurology Intelligence Network; and the inclusion of neurology in the creation of Strategic Clinical Networks. The Alliance and the IRG have demonstrated how collaboration and sustained partnership working can affect tangible, lasting change in an otherwise shifting NHS landscape.
