The Hear Me Now campaign seeks to raise awareness among national and local decision-makers of the health inequalities of prostate cancer for African and Afro-Caribbean men through tailored place-based data in order to encourage and support earlier diagnosis. The campaign is funded by Janssen, and overseen by a steering group comprising BME Cancer Communities, Cancer Black Care, Prostate Cancer UK and Janssen. Hear Me Now initially launched in 2013 and has had great success through focusing on empowering local community leaders in areas with high black populations to engage with commissioners and decision-makers to reduce the burden of prostate cancer. Central to the campaign’s success is the effective use of data, a network of local partnerships with community organisations and leaders as well as national organisations, most notably Public Health England and the National Clinical Director for Cancer. Through effectively communicating to local and regional statutory organisations, this outcome-led campaign has been able to markedly increase the recognition of the health inequality in prostate cancer among local authorities, and encourage new investment in earlier diagnosis in target areas.
A great piece of survey work, tailored to a local, minority population that identified and raised a very important issue in prostate cancer with good responses from both patients and HCP’s. A little early to see the full impact but we hope see that next year.
