With an ever-changing and evolving NHS, multiple sclerosis (MS) specialist nurses are facing rising challenges relating to both their practical case loads and their expanding role in MS management and therapy monitoring. In parallel to this, the pharmaceutical industry is facing increasing pressure to change the way it interacts with healthcare professionals. Considering these issues, Novartis has identified an opportunity to assist the nursing community with the education and investment required to cement and celebrate the role of MS specialist nurses in the UK. To meet this need, we worked with an MS nurse steering committee to create the ‘Get Smart’ education programme. This brought key specialists together to create a meeting series that aimed to build the profile of the MS specialist nurse in the UK. Through creative execution and practical skills training, the ‘Get Smart’ programme has exceeded expectations and has resulted in a real movement to protect and enhance the profile of the specialists who strive to improve the lives of people affected by MS. With huge success, the ‘Get Smart’ programme is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of the MS events calendar.
The educational value of this creative and energetic programme was high, reinforced by the RCN accreditation, as was the endorsement from stakeholders. This was a bold step in transforming the way Novartis interacts with HCPs and left a very positive impression.
