Launching the Novartis Foundation to the Twitter global health community

The Novartis Foundation pioneers innovative healthcare models to improve the health of the world’s poorest populations. A key part of this work is facilitating dialogue and peer-to-peer learning within the global health community.

In 2015, the foundation launched a Twitter channel, using it to explain its aims and showcase its work. It used visually appealing content (both existing and newly-created) to gain attention and generate interest. And it built an online community of valuable, relevant stakeholders by curating content accessibly, targeting potential advocates and sharing complementary content from 3rd parties.

Since launch in August 2015, the channel has grown from zero to more than 600 followers, most of whom are part of the global health community and within the foundation’s target audience. Between August and December 2015, the account achieved an average follower increase of around 50% per month, well above the 10% target set as a KPI.

Around 60% of tweets have been original content (the target was 50%) and, overall, tweets from the account have received over 1.5k engagements and reached around 500,000 Twitter users.

Judges' comments

We were very impressed by the enormity of the achievement of this entry. It had a very clear and systematic purpose, using the right channel for the message, which was supplemented with good content evolution. The entry had great, original visual content and was particularly innovative in making the compliance process work for the project – highly unusual!
