The Ulcerative Colitis Endoscopic Index of Severity (UCEIS) online tool

by Lucid Group for UCEIS Group

Summary of work

Endoscopy is central in determining ulcerative colitis [UC] activity. It provides key information for defining remission in clinical trials and important evidence for making appropriate treatment decisions.

There are many scoring indices for interpreting UC endoscopy images; however, low awareness about their use results in substantial variation between physicians’ assessments of UC. Consequently, the Ulcerative Colitis Endoscopic Index of Severity (UCEIS) was developed and validated by the UCEIS group in Europe and the USA.

An online UCEIS tool was developed by Lucid, pro bono, in collaboration with the UCEIS group. It independently validated the UCEIS in Asia for use globally and educates gastroenterologists on its use.

The online UCEIS is endorsed by the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) and hosted, at no cost, on ECCO’s e-Learning platform.

Asian gastroenterologists have published data demonstrating its great value in UC management, in particular in determining prognosis to optimise UC treatment for individual patients.

Lucid is passionate about improving patients’ lives and this was the only driver for our programme. We take pride in the success of this key collaboration with the UCEIS group and ECCO that has demonstrated its value in improving the way UC is managed across the world.

Judges' comments

Here we saw a globally philanthropic approach that, right from the start, set a gold standard working with the UCEIS Group in a way that genuinely improves perception in healthcare. It is a fantastic initiative that navigated a maze of complexity extremely well. We feel that there is much more to come.
