Acting Together - A roadmap for sustainable healthcare (white paper)

by AbbVie Pharmaceuticals

Summary of work

In March 2014, AbbVie led the creation of the European Steering Group (ESG) for Sustainable Healthcare following their very successful ‘Recipes for Sustainable Healthcare’ multi-stakeholder event which had taken place in Brussels a year prior.

The Steering Group was chaired by former Irish Health Minister Mary Harney and included AbbVie's former WE&C VP Operations, Dr Pascale Richetta (Vice President Operations, AbbVie), Prof Vincenzo Atella (Centre for Economic and International Studies, University of Rome) and Dr Mary Baker (European Brain Council).

Its objective was to become a ‘do-tank’ (versus a ‘think-tank’) and a trusted partner for sustainable healthcare both at EU and national level.

A year of research and reflection, debate and discussion resulted in a comprehensive White Paper, featuring three substantive calls to action and 18 actionable recommendations for ensuring healthcare sustainability.

The project’s scope was vast and required the Steering Group to investigate healthcare sustainability across the whole of Europe. Distilling its findings and recommendations down into a digestible single document with tangible recommendations and specific calls to action was a huge challenge.

The White Paper and the pilot projects from across Europe will provide proofs of concept that help European governments and policymakers transform their healthcare systems.

Judges’ comments

Acting Together was a novel way to print a white paper, harnessing a good design that saw it broken down into digestible points in a very useful way enabling readers to dip in and out of it. This is a project with a massive scope that was difficult to do, but they’ve done it very well.
