Beating Bowel Cancer

Summary of work

Beating Bowel Cancer has a presence that belies our size and resources. We are a small charity at the heart of the cancer policy debate. We’ve influenced policy in many areas, from helping frame the new Cancer Strategy, to advocating strongly for access to new medicines, to the introduction of new screening methods. Income has increased over the last five years from a little over £800,000 to just under £2.5 million. With this increase has come an ability to help more patients and others affected by bowel cancer.

Underpinning everything the charity does is daily direct contact with bowel cancer patients and their families. This has allowed the charity to consistently tell the real-life stories of bowel cancer to remind everyone, from the media to government, of the seriousness of the issue and the need for real change.

In 2015 we moved from being just one voice of many to being the distinctive voice for bowel cancer, this led directly to: access to government at the highest levels; a fruitful and positive working partnership with NHS England; new opportunities to raise awareness of the UK’s second biggest cancer killer; a significant increase in income.

Judges' comments

There was a real sense of maturity from this organisation. It has a very strong focus on its objectives, which are clear and have seen it seek out a good range of partners. Their growing income and services - achieved during a difficult period in public confidence and health funding - is testament to their focus and abilities
