Taking the Pulse of eHealth in the EU

by Incisive Health

Summary of work

Digital innovation in healthcare is much talked about within the EU, but – to date – action has rarely lived up to the words. The stakeholder community, notably policymakers, has taken the digitalisation of healthcare for granted, assuming that healthcare will follow the relatively organic paths to digital revolution set by industries such as finance and transport. The barriers to digital healthcare solutions remain high, with stakeholders unwilling or unable to find solutions to data privacy concerns, quality assurance or how to integrate apps into routine health services.

This project uncovered new data and stimulated fresh conversations about how the potential of online health services, apps and wearable technologies could be realised across Europe, as well as how the challenges preventing this could be overcome. The result was new commitments from the Commission, member states and MEPs. The project is an excellent example of how the clever use of polling can move an issue on, as well as simply securing coverage.
