Summary of work

The annual Haemophilia Academy was established based on a European study demonstrating a dramatic decline in the number of trainee physicians interested in a career in bleeding disorders. It was anticipated that developing a unique programme tailored to meet the educational needs of trainee haematologists within a collaborative environment would encourage more physicians to pursue a career in haemophilia, whilst building a network for best-practice sharing and collaboration. Ten years on, the Haemophilia Academy has provided high-quality, specific education for >300 trainee physicians from 64 countries. The five-day course is delivered by an international Faculty of experts in the field, experienced in providing education. CME-accreditation and endorsement from international haemophilia societies ensure the quality of training. Each year over twice as many applications are received as places available.

Results from 2016–2017 show a 100% retention rate in the field of haemophilia*. Many attendees have taken on significantly more responsibility and care for a greater number of haemophilia patients since attending, and 79% have since led or been involved in research projects and publications. Feedback informs us that physicians feel more confident and better equipped to enhance their clinical practice, with access to a network of alumni for support.
