Summary of work

OptiMiSe for MS Nurses: A Tailored, Added-value Support Service for Clinical Behaviour Change towards Optimised Services

Safe, appropriate access to potentially life-changing disease modifying therapies (DMTs) for MS requires specialist services with the right infrastructure and multidisciplinary team skills for the local population. OptiMiSe for MS nurses is an innovative expert-led learning journey for clinical behaviour change, designed specifically to support MS nurse service leads to deliver optimal care – whatever their local needs and challenges. Launched in 2016, the programme has already demonstrably effected change in nurse behaviour to improve patient outcomes.

Comprehensive data on service issues from the launch years of OptiMiSe demonstrated the need to evolve the programme in 2017 and 2018 by providing more tailored educational sessions, face-to-face change management support and regular coaching touchpoints. This evolution has enabled extraordinary service developments, such as new pathways for the full spectrum of MS, including DMT initiation, relapse care and safety monitoring. Services meeting a target for patient annual review increased by 50% over one year, and the programme has directly contributed to payers allowing local access to treatments.

In 2019, OptiMiSe will provide individualised support for more services than ever before, aiming to assist the dedicated nursing community to provide the best possible care for people with MS.

Judges' comments

The judges were really excited by this entry. What really stood out for them was not only was this an education initiative that was really valued by the participants in the moment and on the day, but real effort had then been made to follow-up with the nurses to help them embed what they’d learnt into their clinical practice.
