Visualise Educational Meeting

by Rock Unlimited for Novartis

Summary of work

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration is the UK’s leading cause of vision loss. The challenge of providing optimal treatment to an increasing number of patients is a huge clinical and service challenge for the NHS. Effective and efficient use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging is key to helping clinicians.

In conjunction with 12 leading UK medical retina specialists, Novartis and Rock Unlimited developed the Visualise programme; an educational meeting to help to address some of the unmet needs relating to service burden and patient outcomes.

In addition, the meeting was supported by an innovative retinal image management platform developed by Moorfields Eye Hospital. This is the first platform to allow integration full image stacks from all the major OCT manufacturers to reflect real-world practice, allowing interactive exploration of scans associated with each case study.

The inaugural Visualise meeting was attended by 158 clinicians. The sharing of real-life case studies and interactive format of this meeting was a success, with 90% of attendees acquiring knowledge about OCT that they felt could be applied to clinical practice.

Further to the success of the Visualise meeting, in 2020 we are rolling out regional meetings to extend the reach of this invaluable educational tool.

Judges’ comments

The judges loved the use of the cloud-based imaging platform to source the case studies – very innovative. The partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital was impressive and it clearly helped improve outcomes and access to patients. The medical validation piece was particularly strong, alongside good creativity and implementation.
