Cancer patient experience survey campaign

by Macmillan Cancer Support

Summary of work

In April 2013 responsibility for the Cancer Patient Experience Survey (CPES) – a proven tool for driving improvements in the experiences of people with cancer – was transferred to NHS England and its future became uncertain.

Using a range of sources of evidence, including case studies from professionals about how they had used the CPES, the results of a survey of our service development teams, the findings from a multidisciplinary workshop which involved patients, professionals and commissioners, and evidence of quantitative improvements in the CPES results, we quickly built the case for the Survey to be continued.

We communicated our case to NHS England through a range of channels. These included building relationships with key officials at NHS England, parliamentary activity that resulted in parliamentarians across different parties writing letters to NHS England and Ministers and tabling 18 parliamentary questions, a campaign e-action signed by 2350 supporters, a high profile media story and the facilitation of a visit by NHS England to Portsmouth NHS Trust to see how the Survey had been used to drive change. The work culminated in a public commitment from NHS England that they had ‘no plans to stop’ carrying out the CPES.

Judges comments

A very strong campaign with clear and ambitious objectives that were 100 per cent met and we saw really good involvement of policy makers and patients. They used the evidence from the survey to effectively get the message across, achieved great outputs and outcomes and truly impressive endorsement.
