Putting bowel cancer on the map

Summary of work

Data was central to the health reforms, yet little work had been done to translate this principle into meaningful resources for patients, professionals and policymakers. Deciding that the UK’s second highest cancer killer should be at the vanguard of this revolution, Beating Bowel Cancer resolved to harness and translate key data.

The Bowel Cancer Map’s launch secured unprecedented media coverage and traffic to the charity’s website and was profiled by the Department of Health in key policy papers. Most tellingly, this campaign drove at least one website user to seek help for his or her symptoms, resulting in an early diagnosis.

Judges comments

This was an innovative campaign particularly in the way it was communicated using a variety of different tools – notably Twitter. A nice, simple straightforward use of data in an emotive area.
