Action on Fistula

by Astellas Pharma EMEA
with support from Forster Communications

Summary of work

The Action on Fistula programme is led by the charity Fistula Foundation and funded by Astellas Pharma EMEA. By mid-2017, the campaign aims to transform the lives of more than 1,200 women in Kenya living with obstetric fistula and to double capacity in the country to deliver ongoing reconstructive surgeries.

Action on Fistula launched in May 2014 and by December, 246 Kenyan women with obstetric fistula were successfully treated with life-changing surgery. To date, this figure has more than doubled, with 528 receiving transformative surgery. One woman treated had waited 51 years for surgery, and the age range of individuals helped so far spans from seven to 90 years old.

In addition, the first two, of a planned six, surgeons have been trained to become experts in fistula treatment and five local organisations have trained 136 community health workers, conducted 850 outreach activities, and reached 60,000 community members in 18 counties.

Employee engagement is a key dimension to the programme, with €9,190 raised through internal fundraising across four Astellas offices to treat an additional 26 women with obstetric fistula.

This model of working is aligned to Astellas’ objective of making a sustainable difference to the fistula treatment landscape.

Judges' comments

Action on Fistula is an extremely important social responsibility initiative. It focuses on a vulnerable population and is all about a real need that Astellas can help with, impacting on and improving patient lives. It is inspiring, particularly based on the number of women treated.
