PEER: Psoriasis Expert Exchange FoRum Changing clinical behaviour on a global scale to improve standards of care in the management of psoriatic disease

Summary of work

Despite numerous systemic treatments for psoriasis, patients remain undertreated and dissatisfied. Over 90% want time-bound treatment goals, yet 53% remain on ineffective treatment for >7 months. Conversely, physicians either lack belief in the need for treatment goals or are uncertain on how to implement them.

PEER is an ambitious platform changing clinical behaviour globally to improve standards of care in psoriatic disease. Phase 1 (of a 4-year programme) drives routine implementation of treatment goals. Built on latest academic thinking in behaviour change, PEER mapped clinical barriers to change and worked with advocates of desired behaviours to create toolboxes addressing each barrier. Flexible global roll-out cascaded advocacy through peer–to-peer communication, sharing practical solutions to overcome country-specific barriers. Reaching 3200 physicians in 25 countries, PEER drove an intended change in practice in 100% of respondents, with self-audit data demonstrating that those implementing treatment goals observed a 33% increase in patients successfully achieving goals, with a 13% increase in appropriate use of systemic treatments. Furthermore, patient-centred treatment goals were incorporated into national guidelines as a direct result of PEER. Overall, results demonstrated PEER’s powerful influence on clinical practice worldwide, and AbbVie’s commitment to scientific exchange and improving standards of care for psoriasis.

The work around the Psoriasis Expert Exchange FoRum [PEER] showed an excellent understanding of the market and took a patient-centred approach from the outset. This was an ambitious programme reaching 3,200 physicians in 25 countries that achieved behavioural change which resulted in improved patient outcomes. A very comprehensive, sophisticated programme with great penetration. Congratulations to the AbbVie team.
