Sandoz seeks mobile-enabled health access solutions

Launches global competition inviting submissions via Facebook

Sandoz mHealth mobile health competition Novartis

Sandoz has kicked off a global competition to find new mobile health ideas for improving access to healthcare.

The Novartis division's 'Sandoz HACk – Healthcare Access Challenge' is open to entries from 18-35 year olds and offers a prize fund of $20,000 to each of its three winners.

Participants apply by posting a 1-2 minute video or 150-200 word post to Sandoz's Facebook page - those that meet the competition's terms are then made visible and further details sent via Facebook messenger.

Richard Francis, division head and CEO of Sandoz, said: “As global healthcare costs continue to rise faster than economic growth, health access will not improve without a major collaborative effort to address the gap, driven by fresh thinking.

“We believe that the biggest changes often come from amazing, small ideas and with the launch of Sandoz HACk we want to identify, promote and nurture creative ideas from around the world to help reimagine access to healthcare.”

The company, a global leader in generics and biosimilar medicines, has partnered with global innovation community OpenIDEO on its new initiative.

After an initial round of judging six finalists will be picked and published on OpenIDEO, where its design solution community will help refine and evolve them.

The shortlisted individuals will then be flown to London in March 2017 to present their ideas to a panel at WIRED Health and then, after another round of judging, three winners will be picked and awarded seed funding and mentorship from Sandoz.

The initiative fits with the trend among pharma, and other less traditional health players, to look for digital health companies to support and potentially partner with.

Those already active in this space include Merck with its digital health accelerator, Merck Sharp & Dohme - via its Velocity Health collaboration, Bayer - with Grants4Apps, Janssen and Microsoft are among those active in this area.
