Sermo reaches 150,000 members after global expansion drive

Online physician community now has doors open in more than 150 new countries

Online physician community Sermo

Sermo now has its virtual doors open in more than 150 countries after an expansion drive that saw members of its global social network for doctors climb to almost 150,000.

The US-based online physician community says its expansion means doctors from all seven continents can now collaborate to crowdsource medical information and rate medicines.

The latter is possible via a new ‘Drug Ratings’ tool the company launched last month, which it says offers the first global peer-to-peer prescription drug review system sourced exclusively from verified licensed physicians and in beta form attracted over 250,000 ratings.

Sermo’s membership has grown from 130,000 in 2012, when it was acquired by WorldOne, to 650,000 total members prior to its latest expansion, which means its network includes close to 800,000 physicians.

CEO Peter Kirk said: “A free exchange of information is crucial for the evolution of healthcare, and Sermo will play an important role in shaping this evolution. We have dedicated ourselves to revolutionising real-world medicine and this expansion further delivers on that mission.

“[The] expanded flow of expert knowledge can make a real impact; it means doctors can access peer advice, no matter where they log-in from, to better serve their patients in the developed and developing worlds. A doctor based in a rural community in Africa can now collaborate on a case with a specialist at Johns Hopkins - at no cost and very quickly - to support better outcomes.”

The expansion is Sermo’s first real drive to grow since moving to Europe and Canada, and launching a Spanish language version, all of which took place in 2015.
