Pharmaceutical Market Europe - January 2016

PME January 2016

Welcome to your first PME of 2016, which in company terms has already started with a bang and the news of Shire’s acquisition of Baxalta for $32bn - coincidentally the same size as AbbVie’s offer for Shire last year, before US tax changes brought that deal crashing to a halt.

In addition to mergers - and asset swaps - this month we take a special look at some future trends in healthcare use of technology.

We also speak to Shire’s international lead for neuroscience Alvaro Herreros, who talked to us about working with patients with ADHD and his firm’s application of technology to that therapy area.

There’s also another exclusive interview, this time with the UK’s chief medical advisor Professor Dame Sally Davies on the growing and very real danger in Europe and beyond posed by antimicrobial resistance.

And if the predictions contained in our cover feature on the rising global use of medicines prove to be correct then the industry is shaping up for a strong couple of years, provided pricing and market access hurdles can be overcome.

With further strong signs seen in new product approvals, which last year scaled a 19-year high in the US, 2016 is already shaping up to be quite a year.
