The rising popularity of online networks of doctors

Doctors.net.uk’s membership figures highlight growing trend for independent online networking

Online physician communitiesThe rising popularity of independent professional online networks was underlined this summer when Doctors.net.uk – the UK's largest and most active online network of doctors – saw its membership tip the 200,000 mark.

The organisation, which celebrates its 15th birthday this month, has been growing steadily in recent years and now has a total of 200,006 members, which represents over 80 per cent of all doctors in the UK*.

Rated as the most trusted source of information for the majority of its members, Doctors.net.uk is used by more than 45,000 GMC registered primary and secondary care doctors every day for information, education and to collaborate with their peers.

An audit conducted in November last year by media industry experts ABC, confirmed that the organisation had 63,332 monthly active registered user accounts in that month. This figure excludes usage of Doctors.net.uk's email service; while the number of unique browsers in November 2012 stood at 409,990 when calculated on the basis of IP address figures, which shows that doctors are using multiple devices to access the site.

When Doctors.net.uk was set up in 1998, independent online professional networks were a pioneering concept. Since then, they have become an invaluable tool for around 3m doctors across the world, who use them to communicate and collaborate in a secure online environment that cannot be accessed by the general public.

Data from Manhattan Research shows the main reason that doctors in France, Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK access physician-only social networks is to stay up-to-date with medical information (66%); while 48% do so to get information efficiently. Other data from Manhattan Research shows 35% of doctors access physician-only social networks to ask a clinical question.
