MannKind boosts its senior management team

Matthew Pfeffer becomes chief executive officer

California-based MannKind has appointed Matthew Pfeffer as its chief executive officer to replace Alfred Mann, who had held the role ad interim since November.

Pfeffer will continue to serve as Mannkind's chief financial officer and has also been nominated to the board of directors, filling an existing vacancy.

Prior to joining Mannkind in 2008, Pfeffer served as chief financial officer and senior vice president of finance and administration for VaxGen, where he was responsible for overseeing the biopharmaceutical company's treasury and tax dealings as well as IT and human resources.

Kent Kresa, lead director of Mannkind, said: "Matt has been a valuable member of the executive management of Mannkind for many years and has been instrumental in managing our transition to a commercial stage operation.

"He understands the strategic and financial challenges that we face at this very important time for our company and has already begun to pursue a number of solutions."

Pfeffer's appointment follows the withdrawal of the company's previous offer of employment to Duane DeSisto who will no longer take up the chief executive officer and president role for Mannkind.

DeSisto' former employer Insulet Corporation raised objections to his prospective roles at Mannkind, citing conflict with the US-based medical devices company's non-competition agreement with DeSisto which remains in effect until September.
