Evidence-based Adherence Strategies

  • Professor Rob Horne, Professor of Behavioural Medicine, UCL, will start with understanding the real determinants of medicines-related behaviour and the findings of his 15-year research programme.
  • Andrew Martello, Managing Director, SoS will then focus on the translation of the latest research into illness and medicines-related behaviour to ‘real world’, implementable programmes to ensure that all stakeholders are making the most of medicines.
  • Finally, Chris Dickinson, Head of Digital Solutions at SoS will discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with the digital deployment of behavioural change programmes in a healthcare setting and highlight the need for multi-channel, and tailored patient support.

Rob Horne

Rob is Professor of Behavioural Medicine at the UCL School of Pharmacy and an internationally recognised expert in medicines-related behaviour and adherence to medicines. In addition to his extensive peer-reviewed publications, he has contributed to numerous national and international reports and guidelines on adherence. Rob’s expertise is frequently drawn upon by national charities, the NHS and commercial healthcare organisations. Rob founded and leads the Centre for Behavioural Medicine at UCL. The main focus of his current research is the development of theory-based interventions to facilitate informed choice and optimal adherence to medication in chronic illness. Rob’s consultancy work is conducted exclusively through Spoonful of Sugar. 

 

Andrew Martello

Andrew spent 13 years working in the pharmaceutical industry, predominantly championing and establishing patient-centred approaches in the UK and globally. Andrew has seen first-hand the devastating effects of non-adherence in chronic, life-limiting conditions and as a direct result has made it his mission to address this vital healthcare challenge. As a global strategic marketer within speciality medicine, Andrew has extensive commercial experience that enables him to see the perspectives of all interested parties in healthcare and spearhead solutions that meet individual’s needs. Andrew is a hands-on managing director who is directly involved in the planning and implementation of multi-country adherence and patient support programmes utilising the latest research in medicines-related behaviour.

 

Chris Dickenson

Chris has a unique combination of 10 years’ software development experiencein the demanding financial sector and a proactive drive to learn about and apply psychological techniques. These include clinical psychology, personal management, building high performing teams, behavioural change, mindfulness and emotional intelligence. Chris is currently undertaking a part-time MSc in cognitive neuroscience, specialising in computational models. When Chris discovered Spoonful of Sugar, he instantly recognised it as the perfect place to apply his technology expertise and knowledge of psychology to the design and implementation of digital solutions for programmes.
