Admiral Nurse to develop dementia helpline

The charity, for dementia, is to develop UK national helpline, Admiral Nursing DIRECT, manned by specialist dementia care nurses

The charity, for dementia, has made Ian Weatherhead Lead Nurse to head and develop UK national helpline, Admiral Nursing DIRECT, manned by specialist dementia care nurses.

Ian works with John Suchet and his wife, who suffers from dementia, and was highly praised at last week's Communiqué Awards by John when he spoke to guests in his capacity as a Patron of the charity. Over £20,000 was raised at the event.

Ian said: "This is such an exciting new opportunity – it allows me to bring a wealth of experience of dementia to this pioneering role and develop a truly national service. Our aim is to provide high quality support for more families affected by dementia, quickly."

He has over 30 years' experience in mental health and became an Admiral Nurse in 2006 with the Central North West London Foundation Trust, where he brought about 'a significant change in thought process with a total shift of emphasis from patient to carer'.

The media interest surrounding John Suchet and his personal journey through dementia has significantly increased the demands on Admiral Nursing DIRECT, highlighting the need for leadership, increased resources and co-ordination.

Ian wants to expand the hours of availability of Admiral Nursing DIRECT by training Admiral nurses across the country to man the helpline with the current London-based Admiral Nurses.

Admiral Nursing DIRECT is available on Tel: 0845 257 9406 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am – 9pm. At other times, callers can email: direct@fordemenetia.org.uk or leave a message for a nurse to call back.
