AZ announces £25m communications deal with BT

AstraZeneca has signed a new deal worth £25m with British Telecom, its global communications partner, it announced on February 25.

AstraZeneca (AZ) has signed a new deal worth £25m with British Telecom (BT), its global communications partner, it announced on February 25.

BT will provide AZ with a single delivery platform, centralising its voice, video, and multimedia applications into one company-wide operating system.

The five-year contract will see instant communications being maintained and provided at 131 of AZ's sites across 60 countries, with a total of 170 managed connections being created.

Laurie Bowen, managing director commercial brands for BT Global Services UK said: "We are delighted that AZ has entrusted BT with the growth and continued management of its global network."

"AZ is a telling example of how global businesses are increasingly reliant upon permanent connectivity," said Bowen.

This new deal between BT and AZ comes as the pharmaceutical industry continues to opt for greater cooperation and company mergers and acquisitions during a period of financial unrest.

"BT services will deliver greater agility, responsiveness, and collaboration among our global workforce," said Richard Williams, global chief information officer for AZ. "This in turn, will lead to improved business performance."

AZ appointed a new non-executive director on February 21 amid growing concerns raised by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) about the loss of future investment in British pharma companies.

The pharma company also faces the prospect of a protracted legal battle as it appeals the decision made in last week's US Medicaid court case, which issued AZ with a $215m fine. [PMLive February 22.]
