AstraZeneca (AZ) has appointed Katja Toon as communications director, externalisation, to lead the pharmaceutical company's dealings with other firms and organisations.

Reporting to Neil McCrae, vice-president of group corporate communications, Toon's newly created role will see her raise the profile of AZ with regards to in-licensing, acquisitions and opportunities for partnership.

In a statement, AZ has said its goal is to become "the partner of choice with academic and industry audiences".

Toon has 15 years of international experience in healthcare communications, including her most recent position at M:Communications.

Prior to this role, she co-founded and was director of Northbank Communications, a specialist life sciences consultancy that was acquired by College Hill in October 2007.

Commenting on her appointment, Toon said: "AstraZeneca already has an excellent track record in innovation and commercialisation of pharmaceuticals and I am looking forward to helping the company to achieve its externalisation objectives including that of becoming the partner of choice amongst industry audiences."
