Bayer photo contest to raise awareness of blood clot

Public invited to submit photos that take their breath away

The pharma company Bayer is encouraging people to submit photos of breath-taking moments as part of a competition to raise awareness of a rare blood clot condition.

The Breathless Moments photo contest is intended to education the public about chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), a form of hypertension caused by blood clots in the lungs that can make breathing very difficult.

The competition was launched on the first CTEPH awareness day on November 18 and is run by Bayer and its partner the charity Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA).

Anyone can entre the competition by submitting a photo they have taken that captures a moment that took their breath away. Photos must be submitted at the website and entry is open until February 27, 2015.

A panel of CTEPH patients will decide on their favourite photo, which will be included in future awareness activities around CTEPH.

“The Breathless Moments contest will encourage people to reconsider and appreciate the positive moments in life that leave them breathless, while learning more about CTEPH," said Dario Mirski, head of medical affairs, for Bayer's pharmaceuticals business in the US.

"CTEPH is a rare and life-threatening condition that can go undiagnosed for years. We hope that, thanks to this campaign, those experiencing symptoms will start conversations with their doctors early on."

These symptoms include shortness of breath, chest discomfort and fatigue caused by blood clots in pulmonary vessels that lead to increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries.

Such symptoms are also experienced in more common conditions, such as asthma, and CTEPH is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed as another disease.
