Boehringer and Novartis in the running for social media award

Firms are among those shortlisted at PM Society's Digital Awards

Twitter pharma hashtagBoehringer Ingelheim and Novartis are among the big pharma firms shortlisted for Social Media Pharma Company of the Year at next week’s PM Society Digital Awards.

They will be competing against AbbVie, Bayer and Pfizer for the prize, whose finalists were determined as having the five most influential Twitter accounts.

This was done by Symplur Signals, which analysed online conversations in 2015 around the top 10 diseases with the highest mortality rates, in the process collecting 606 million healthcare tweets.

Boehringer and Novartis were the first two companies in the industry to join Twitter in 2008, with the following year proving something of a tipping point for the social network and its use by pharma.

The site has since become a mainstream tool for healthcare communications – despite occasional missteps and fears about using social media in a highly regulated environment.

The PM Society Digital Awards will take place in London on Wednesday 27 April
