Ex-Pfizer UK medical director Dr David Gillen joins Celgene

Dr Gillen takes up the role of UK and Ireland medical director

David Gillen - Celgene medical director UKDr David Gillen has been named UK and Ireland medical director at Celgene.

He joins from Gilead Sciences where he served as head of international medical affairs since 2010.

Gillen's prior roles include serving as UK medical director at Pfizer – a position he held from 2007 until 2009, during which time he covered the Pfizer Primary Care Business Unit across  Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

During his time at Pfizer, Gillen helped with the company's  "Fake medicine, real danger" campaign, which involved a controversial advertisement to warn against counterfeit medicines  in which a man pulls a dead rat from his mouth

Celgene will hope to take advantage of Gillen's strong relationship with the UK's National Health Service (NHS), where he worked as a physician for seven years before entering the pharma industry.

He continued his connection with the UK medical community while at Pfizer, becoming involved in the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) working party looking at the relationship between industry, academic medicine and the NHS.

He also serves on the sub- committees of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC).

Celgene's general manager in the UK and Ireland Samantha Pearce described Dr Gillen as one of the most “well respected and experienced medical leaders in the UK pharmaceutical industry”.

She added: “We very much welcome David in what is a very exciting time for Celgene and really look forward to him being part of our future success.”

Gillen said: “I am delighted to be appointed as medical director at Celgene and look forward to working with the team in an area that I'm passionate about. This is a very exciting time as Celgene's portfolio expands and I can't wait to build on the excellent work that's already being undertaken.”
