Dept of Health kicks off nationwide sepsis awareness campaign

Hopes to increase public recognition of the condition

UK Sepsis TrustA government-funded, nationwide sepsis awareness campaign has been launched in the UK to improve recognition and understanding of the condition by the public and healthcare professionals.

The Department of Health and Public Health England will collaborate on 'Just ASK: could it be sepsis?' with the UK Sepsis Trust, which has lobbied for such an initiative since its inception in 2012.

Some 45% of Britons do not know what sepsis is, with just over a third having never heard of the condition, according to a YouGov poll.

The survey 1,687 people also found 25% of those questioned were unaware that sepsis constitutes a medical emergency.

The campaign partners believe earlier recognition and treatment of sepsis could not only save 14,000 lives every year but also save the NHS £314m annually.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “Sepsis is a devastating condition and patients rightly expect the NHS to be able to recognise it and provide the highest quality patient care.

“We are committed to a new campaign that will raise awareness of the condition and have worked closely with the UK Sepsis Trust to make sure it will help people to spot the signs and get the help they need.”

The campaign will distribute resources on sepsis, including leaflets, posters and safety netting tools, in public healthcare locations across the country.

These join the campaign's recently released 'Spotting sepsis in children' leaflet for parents, which was trialed in the South West by NHS England in response to the death of a young boy from sepsis in 2010.

Sepsis, a blood poisoning condition, affects around 150,000 adults and children in the UK each year, resulting in approximately 44,000 deaths.
