E-Card for patient records

Healthcare provider, Westover, has launched a new system which allows patients to access their medical records from anywhere in the world
Healthcare provider, Westover, has launched a new system which allows patients to access their medical records from anywhere in the world.

The new card will allow patients to log onto a secure website from any computer terminal and will give them access to their medical history. This could prove useful for Westover patients who travel abroad and students moving away from home to university.

ìWe believe the Health E-Card will be enormously popular with our members,î said Dr Amber Kennard, chief executive officer of Westover. ìThe ability to access their complete medical history through any computer in the world is excellent news for patients with complicated chronic conditions, who may need to seek treatment from other people other than their GP.î

According to Westover, data will not be stored locally on individual computers but on a website which is password protected. In light of the sensitive nature of medical records, Tony Stephenson, spokesman for the healthcare provider was keen to emphasise that all data will be made as

ìYou could potentially crack it if you want to spend enough time doing so, but it is as secure as can be though,î said Stephenson who explained that the data canít be viewed ìuntil you actually access the secure websiteî.

In the past year there have been several scandals involving the loss of large amounts of personal data held by the government. In particular, the Department of Social Security lost records of thousands of families claiming benefits, which included peopleís bank details and dates of birth.
