Edelman executive joins AdvaMed

The US Advanced Medical Technology Association has hired Edelman's Gary Karr to serve as executive vice president for public affairs

The US Advanced Medical Technology Association has hired Gary Karr from Edelman's health practice to serve as the association's executive vice president for public affairs, effective January 3.

At Edelman, Karr was executive vice president in the Washington, DC-based Health Policy and Public Affairs Practice, providing counsel on strategic communications, health policy issues, media relations and crisis communications for clients including pharma and device companies and trade associations.

Before joining the agency, he was director of media affairs at the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where he served as CMS administrator Mark McClellan's chief spokesperson during the launch of the highly publicised Medicare prescription drug benefit. Prior to joining CMS in 2004, Karr led federal media relations for the American Insurance Association. Earlier in his career, he worked as a journalist.

In his new role at AdvaMed, Karr will be responsible for helping to educate the public about the value of medical technology and will also work on communicating with lawmakers and other target populations regarding issues currently facing the industry, including proposed changes to the 510(k) review programme, reauthorisation of the Medical Device User Fee Act, payment issues related to healthcare reform, and international regulatory and payment concerns.

AdvaMed is the main US trade organisation for companies producing medical devices, diagnostics and health information systems, with members including Pfizer, Novo Nordisk and Novartis Diagnostics.
