EFPIA announces launch of Global Health Progress

The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations has announced the launch of the Global Health Progress initiative
The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) has announced the launch of the Global Health Progress (GHP) initiative.

It is hoped the GHP will build stronger partnerships between NGOs, the pharma industry and governments to consolidate global research priorities and combat health problems in the developing world. The GPH is designed to act as central meeting point for the industry and its partners to bolster efforts to combat medical problems and epidemics across some of the world's poorest nations.

Brian Ager, director general of the EFPIA, said: "Global health progress is a groundbreaking initiative to focus the expertise of the pharmaceutical industry to work with a diverse array of partners to create lasting, sustainable global health change. We recognise that global health challenges are complex and we want to contribute our experience and resources to developing new solutions."

The GHP website lists details of more than 300 partners, 400 programmes and ongoing investments of billions of dollars. By relaying the stories of individual health workers on the ground, the site will highlight those groups and people making a positive impact.

Billy Tauzin, COO of the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), said: "Research-based biopharmaceutical companies have a longstanding commitment to improving global health - this initiative is a recognition of our unique role and desire to accelerate progress in fighting disease and strengthening healthcare systems in developing countries."
