European supply chain under threat says new report

European pharmaceutical companies traditional supply chain models are under threat following changing focuses of British pharmaceutical manufacturers said a recent report.

The 102 page report entitled ëPharmaceutical Distribution in Europe: The Emergence of Direct-to-Pharmacy Supply Chain' says that pharma manufacturers in the UK are changing their product distribution practices.

URCH Publishing, who released details of the findings today, said the report contains, "information and analysis on the structure of the European medicines' supply chain".

Dr Faiz Kermani, the report's author, said: "The adoption of a direct-to-pharmacy (DTP) model by some of the industry's most powerful players in the UK signifies a new trend that could spread across Europe."

Broken down into four key areas, the report provides insight into the aggressive pan-European wholesaler expansion strategies and an overview of the European supply chain.

According to URCH Publishing, the report says that, "the near-term prospects for pharmacists appear bleak whilst a new breed of super distributors linked up with select wholesalers may emerge".

Kermani said: "After initial doubts, it is clear that the European supply chain is destined for change. So far, pharmaceutical manufacturers have to drive changes to suit their interests, with opposition to their moves having had little effect."
