First fully academic med ed provider

The first academically founded, full-service medical education provider in the UK has been launched

The first academically founded, full-service medical education provider in the UK has been launched.

The University Centre for Medical Education and Continuing Professional Development is part of the University of Hertfordshire and will provide academically endorsed or accredited programmes for healthcare professionals either directly or through healthcare industry-sponsored initiatives. The university centre is a not-for-profit company.

"The university centre gives the healthcare industry the opportunity to take its medical education support to a whole new level," commented Cheri Hunter, head of the university's post-graduate medical school and director of academic programmes at the university centre.

"Those working in the NHS recognise and value the support the industry provides, but they are increasingly looking for assurances of the educational quality of the industry-supported programmes they attend. The university centre can help the industry meet these expectations as our programmes will provide the mark of academic quality."

As well as more traditional study days, short courses and distance learning, to meet the requirements of the busy healthcare professional, education can be delivered through 'blended learning'. This uses a mix of technology including lecture-based education, work-based and distance learning using established interactive online education platforms. Courses can also accumulate credits for participants, which can lead to full academic qualifications such as a diploma or a master's degree.

The university centre will fully implement its unique programmes from initial brief to final evaluation while meeting the high standards of delivery expected by the healthcare industry for the initiatives they support. Programmes can be delivered at any suitable location, but can also offer access to the University of Hertfordshire's facilities including its advanced clinical simulation centre – one of the largest in Europe.
