Former Teva CEO Israel Makov to chair Sun Pharma

Man behind Teva’s global expansion hopes to oversee same for Indian generics company

Israel Makov - Sun Pharma chairIsrael Makov, former president and CEO of Teva Pharmaceutical, has been appointed chair of the board of directors at Sun Pharma.

He takes over from Dilip Shanghvi who will remain managing director of the Indian generics firm.

Makov was president and CEO at Israel-based Teva from 2002 to 2007 having joined as VP for business development in 1995. He then served as executive VP from 1999 and then chief operating officer from 2001 to 2002.

During his time at the head of Teva, Makov led the company's global expansion, which included 12 acquisitions, to become the world's largest generics company – a position it has since upheld.

Makov hinted that he hopes to achieve similar levels of success at Sun as he had with Teva: “Sun Pharma is an exciting company poised for substantial global expansion and I look forward to working together with Dilip and his team in realising their visionary goals.”

Shanghvi was equally hopeful: “[Makov] is an exceptional leader with deep knowledge and experience in globalising businesses successfully. As Sun Pharma continues to rapidly expand its presence worldwide, I am sure that we will benefit immensely from his experience.”

Since leaving Teva in 2007, Makov has been chair of Given Imaging, a company leading development of capsule endoscopy, as well as chair of Biolight, a life science investment firm. He also serves as chair of Micromedic Technologies and chair of Eltav.

Other non-commercial positions include serving on the boards of both the Israel National Nanotechnology Initiative and the Israel Institute of Technology.

Makov's experience before Teva includes two years as CEO of investment company Gottex, two years as CEO of agricultural firm Yachin Hakal and four years as chair of Axiom.
