GSK ramps up operations in Iraq

GSK has begun to grow its operations in Iraq through a partnership with Baghdad-based Modern Drug Industries

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has started to increase its operations in Iraq in the wake of increased security in the country. 

The company told PMLive that it is looking to build its business by expanding its presence on the ground, by continuing to work on government tenders and working with local manufacturing companies.

The company is in the process of finalising a deal with the local firm Modern Drug Industries, which will see GSK use the company's Baghdad facilities for the packaging and manufacturing of GSK's medicines.

A GSK spokeswoman said: “We are taking a long-term view. We are building our partners' expertise and keeping costs down. We are in the process of finalising the agreement, there is some work needed on its facilities to get them up to GSK standards, but we are hoping to start operations towards the end of the year.” 

GSK has had a presence in Iraq for the past 20 years.
