Industry supports Alzheimer's Day

Pharmaceutical companies and organisations, including the European Medicines Agency are supporting World Alzheimer's Day to raise awareness of the neurological disease

Pharmaceutical companies and organisations, including the European Medicines Agency (EMA) are supporting World Alzheimer's Day to raise awareness of the neurological disease.

The day, held each year on September 21, aims to educate and challenge people's misconceptions about Alzheimer's disease and dementia, with the theme for 2011 'faces of dementia'.

Alzheimer's Disease International, the organisers of the event, said the theme encourages people to recognise the signs of dementia while paying tribute to those who are working to promote increased support and care for people with dementia and their carers.

The EMA said a total of 11 medicines for use in patients with Alzheimer's disease have been authorised in the EU on the recommendation of the Agency.

The Agency also works closely with organisations representing patients with dementia through Alzheimer Europe, an umbrella organisation of 31 national Alzheimer's associations from 27 European countries.

Dementia was also mentioned as part of the United Nations (UN) Summit on Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs), with the final political declaration of the summit recognising neurological diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, as an important cause of morbidity that contribute to the global NCD burden.

About 36 million people are living with dementia worldwide today and incidents are increasing especially in lower and middle income countries.
