Menopause talking point

A new multimedia campaign in the US urges women to talk to healthcare professionals about the menopause and the impact it can have on their health

Wyeth has launched an awareness programme in the US to encourage women to talk to their doctor about the menopause, urging them to `get the facts' about the condition.

The multimedia campaign, which features actress Cheryl Ladd, includes ads on network and cable television and an online resource, www.talkingtoyourdoctor.com, where women can find out more about the condition and access new information about their health during and after the menopause.

ìThere is so much new information on menopausal health that has been learned in recent years,î said Dr Anita Nelson, professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. ìMenopause is an important milestone in a woman's life and a good time to address everything from menopausal symptoms to bone loss, exercise and nutrition.

ìI see a need for a campaign like this that helps motivate my patients to start and maintain a dialogue about their health,î she added.

In 30-second television spots, Ladd emphasises the role of doctors and other healthcare professionals in helping women through the menopause. As part of the campaign, she encourages women to `get the facts' from healthcare professionals who now know more than ever about the symptoms and impact of the condition.

The web resource accompanying the campaign gives women access to general tips on how to talk to a doctor about the menopause, and information on postmenopausal osteoporosis and increased risks of other health conditions. It also has a `symptom accessor' - a tool to track menopausal symptoms, their frequency, severity and possible impact on daily life.

Market research carried out by Wyeth suggests there has been a 30 per cent fall in the number of women visiting their doctor about menopausal issues in the last three years.
