Mundel to lead Gates’ Global Health Programme

Dr Trevor Mundel, current global head of development for Novartis Pharma AG, has been named president of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Global Health Programme

Dr Trevor Mundel, current global head of development for Novartis, has been named president of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Global Health Programme.

In this position, he will oversee the foundation's global health grant portfolio, which, to date, includes more than $14.7bn in grants. His main task, however, will be to lead efforts to develop and deliver drugs, vaccines and other tools to fight developing-world diseases. He will work to fight diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as well as on the goal of eradicating polio. Commenting on his appointment, Mundel said he was 'humbled and deeply honoured to join Bill and Melinda in their mission."

Jeff Raikes, CEO of the foundation, said: "After a global search, it became clear that Dr Mundel's deep understanding of the complexities, challenges and opportunities to improve global health made him a prime match for us."

Since 2003, Mundel has been a senior executive and scientist at Novartis, most recently as global head of development. In his time at Novartis he oversaw around 140 clinical projects, a budget of $3bn, and more than 7,500 employees.

The co-chair of the foundation, Bill Gates, stated: "We are very pleased that Dr Mundel has agreed to lead our global health programme," and added that he looked forward to working with him.

Mundel is due to start work at the foundation on December 1.
