New pharma marketing board

Trade and investment minister Lord Digby Jones has announced the creation of new strategy board tasked with promoting the UK's expertise in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.

Trade and investment minister Lord Digby Jones has announced the creation of new strategy board tasked with promoting the UK's expertise in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.

The UK lifescience Marketing Strategy Implementation Board, which will be chaired by Chris Brinsmead, president of AstraZeneca and soon to be president of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), has been setup to maintain the sector's leading position globally and combat an increasingly competitive market.

"I firmly believe that we can make a real difference to UK lifesciences," said Brinsmead. "We are rightly number one in Europe, but in a world where business can invest anywhere around the globe, we have to work even harder to protect our status as a centre for R&D innovation for the future."

UK lifesciences and the healthcare sector were worth £120bn in 2006 and in the same year the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector was the largest investor in the country's R&D output.

Lord Jones said: "The UK has a great story to tell with world class expertise and the firm backing of the government, which is committed to making the UK the best global destination for lifescience investment."

"I believe it [the board] has the right mix of experience to promote UK lifesciences successfully, as ambassadors of one of our countries global champions sectors," he added.

An expert panel made of industry professionals and leaders will meet this week and begin developing a shared marketing charter. It is hoped that the board will consolidate industry and business resources in the lifesciences sector to promote its strengths to potential outside investors.
