NHS marks its Twitter debut with story-sharing initiative

Three-month project will see a patient or staff member take over the new account

The NHS has launched its first Twitter account with an initiative to shine a light on the patient and staff stories behind the organisation.

Over the next three months, either a NHS patient or one of its 1.3 million staff members will become the new account's curator, live-tweeting a week of their lives and their experiences with the national health service.

Jane Cummings, chief nursing officer for NHS England, said: “The NHS is a complex institution that touches all our lives but often we only read about it in headlines on the front page of a newspaper.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our much valued patients and NHS staff to hold a magnifying glass up to the system, so we can learn from their experiences as we continue with our ambition to improve the way that care is delivered.”

The account's first curator is Richard Orchard, a cancer patient who began tweeting from the @NHS account on Monday. Throughout the week, Orchard will answer questions and share his experiences of living with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and keeping healthy and fit while undergoing treatment with the NHS.

He said: “It's been an eventful time in my life being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and I'm looking forward to sharing my journey with others for the week - with all its highs and lows!

“I hope some of my experiences will strike a chord with fellow cancer patients to let them know they're not alone in this.”

The NHS's Twitter project follows in the footsteps of Ireland and Sweden's official national Twitter accounts, both of which have been handed over to nominated curators to present the countries' lifestyles and connect their citizens all over the world.
