Novartis has been name the 20th most valuable brand in Europe by the European Brand Institute, making it the top rated company in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry.

The rating was a drop of two places from the 2010 results compiled by the Institute, which provides research into intangible assets, emphasising both patent and brand value.

Other pharmaceutical companies to make the top 50 were Sanofi at 25, GlaxoSmithKline at 34 and Bayer at 43.

Research from  the European Brand Institute took into account more than 3.000 brand corporations in 24 countries and 16 industries have been examined, with comparisons to America and Asia.

A separate list of the top 100 companies globally rated by brand value saw Johnson & Johnson as the highest ranked healthcare company at 11. Pfizer rated at 29 and Novartis was 54.
