Recent high-profile moves in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries
Mover of the month is Dr Ian Weatherhead who has been appointed director of communications, UK, at sanofi-aventis

Sanofi-aventis has announced that Dr Ian Weatherhead will join the company as director of communications, UK, effective from October 2010. He fills the vacancy that was created when former communications director Cressida Ward moved to a newly created global CSR role. Dr Weatherhead joins sanofi from UCB, where he has held the role of communications & public affairs director, UK since 2005. He also led communications within UCBs research & development organisation. Prior to 'joining UCB, Dr Weatherhead held senior external communications roles at AstraZeneca and Syngenta.

Packer Forbes Communications has awarded six internal promotions following the launch of its personal development scheme, STEPs. Rachael Priest has been promoted to senior account manager and Joella Webber has been made an account manager, with Ginnie Tuck and Gemma Rickwood both achieving senior account executive positions. Fleur Wylie and Nicola Kent have both been promoted to account executive within six months of joining the agency.

Dr Anne-Marie Masquelier, a medical doctor with a specialisation in endocrinology and an MBA in marketing/management, has been appointed global medical research director of Cegedim Strategic Data's Medical Research CRO activities worldwide. Anne-Marie's most recent positions include general manager of Genethon, president of GenoSafe, president of Aster-Cephac, and general manager Southern Europe of MDS Pharma Services. Anne-Marie has also been awarded the Légion d'honneur.

Joanna Potts, former head of primary care at AstraZeneca, has been appointed to the role of consultant at the MSI Consultancy. Joanna has over 20 years' experience in the industry, gained in roles at Novartis, Sanofi and Lederle/Wyeth. MSI has also appointed Michael Craig as senior consultant. Michael joined MSI from Actelion in 2007.

PHOTOSOUND has appointed Robert Thomson to the role of head of digital product development. Robert has over 15 years' digital and programming experience and says that key areas of development will include modular scalable portals targeting niche medical areas and the current social media infrastructures.

 


InterComm has promoted Ben Greeves from the role of director of e-media to general manager. Ben has 15 years' experience in business management across multiple agencies on IT, web, agency management and systems enhancement issues. InterComm has also recently expanded the editorial team with the recruitment of three more medical writers: Dr Ezat Sajedi, Dr Janki Shah and Dr Sobia Hamid.

Belgian company Movetis has expanded into the UK and has appointed David Trevor as general manager of Movetis (UK). The company has also recruited a sales force of eight representatives. 

Masters Pharmaceuticals has appointed Bill Burns as non-executive chairman of its board. Bill has over 40 years' experience in the sector and has held several senior management roles at Roche. Most recently he was CEO of Roche Pharmaceuticals and a member of the corporate executive committee of the Roche Group.

Phagenesis, a University of Manchester spinout, has appointed Henry Hyde-Thomson as chairman and Daniel Green as chief executive officer. Henry and Daniel will lead Phagenesis in the development of a new class of treatments for stroke victims suffering from dysphagia, a condition that prevents or impairs the safe swallowing of food and drink.

Dr Karine Mignon-Godefroy has been named director of research & development at Ingen Biosciences. Dr Mignon-Godefroy has 15 years' experience in biotechnology and joins Ingen from the blood virus division of Bio-Rad, where she was director of international projects. 

Patrick Hopkinson has joined Bristol Myers-Squibb UK as market access director. Patrick joins from GlaxoSmithKline, where he held the role of director portfolio & partnership marketing.

Phytopharm has appointed Tim Sharpington as chief executive officer and board director. Tim, who is also a non-executive director of Clinical Force, has nearly 20 years' experience in the life sciences sector with various biotechnology and pharmaceutical service companies in Europe and the USA. He has broad experience across drug development, in-licensing, M&A as well as fund raisings. 

Jeff Sells has been appointed chief financial officer of Sigma. Jeff has over 20 years' experience in financial and commercial management: most recently, he was chief financial officer of Citadel Resource Group and before that he was CFO of Oxiana. Jeff also has prior experience of working with Sigma: between 2002 and 2004 he held the position of group treasurer. 

David Ginsburg, MD and Anne Minto OBE have been appointed to the Shire board of directors. Dr Ginsburg is currently professor of internal medicine human genetics at the Life Sciences Institute, University of Michigan; an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis Professor of Medicine. Anne, a qualified lawyer and fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development, is group director human resources at Centrica and has previously held senior positions at Shell UK, Smiths Group and the Engineering Employers' Federation.

Wayne J Riley, MD, MBA, president and chief executive officer of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, has joined the board of directors of Vertex Pharmaceuticals as an independent director, bringing the number of Vertex board members to 10. Dr Riley's term expires in 2011 and he will be subject to re-election by the company's shareholders in May 2011.

Ronald D Sugar has been appointed to the board of Amgen, bringing the total number of Amgen board members to 14. Dr Sugar will also serve as a member of the compensation and management development committee and the governance and nominating committee.

Marie Pickford has joined doctors.net.uk in the newly created role of client services director. With 13 years of experience spanning the public and private healthcare sectors, Marie spent four years as a poisons information specialist, as well as undertaking roles at TVF and Elsevier. Ben Mansfield has also joined the company as business development director. Ben has more than 10 years' experience of delivering multi-channel promotional and educational campaigns for pharmaceutical brands including Schwarz Pharma and Janssen-Cilag.

RSA has made several new appointments in is international offices. Amber Burns has joined RSA as a senior consultant within the company's clinical & regulatory practice. RSA Germany welcomes Steffen Deutschenbauer as a consultant, and in Switzerland, Johann Cheminelle has been appointed senior researcher. 

IMS Health has appointed Mike Sanvoisin to the role of general manager, UK, Ireland and South Africa. Most recently Mike led the sales, business line and supplier relations function in the UK for IMS. He takes over from Seyed Mortazavi, who stays with IMS to take on the role of president, EMEA. 

Fleishman-Hillard Group has appointed Dean Russell as director of digital. Dean has developed communications and social media strategies for clients such as the Department of Health, NHS, Business Link, Equality & Human Rights Commission, FTSE250, and top-tier universities and charities. Over the past 18 months Dean has co-authored several high profile industry reports looking into trends and best practice across NHS, Higher Education and Charity online communications, and he is currently a member of the NHS National Clinical Reference Panel. 

Sharman Shaw has announced an internal promotion and a new appointment. Simon Jones has been promoted to account director and Jason Holland joins the company as project manager. Simon has been with the company 12 years and Jason has previously worked at various exhibit companies, including Early Action Group, Vertex Exhibitions and Big Blue Media.

Carol Blount has joined the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) as head of commercial affairs. Carol has more than 15 years' senior level leadership experience within UK pharma including leadership of strategic innovation and change, business development and brand marketing. She has worked previously for Bayer and AstraZeneca and among her new duties she will be taking responsibility for joint working and QIPP initiatives in place of Martin Anderson, who left his role as director for NHS policy and partnerships at the ABPI in July.

Sandy Royden has been elected as chairman of the PM Society, replacing Steve Clark. She is joined by Dr Beverly Barr, who was elected one of the two vice chairmen of the Society as a replacement for Matt Coleman.

John J Castellani will replace Billy Tauzin as president and chief executive officer of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). John, a high-profile business lobbyist who was most recently president and chief executive officer of Business Roundtable, will take up his position at PhRMA on September 1, 2010.
