John Goddard has been appointed as head of licensing strategy at AstraZeneca UK. John, who took up the newly-created role in April, was previously the financial director of AstraZeneca in the US. In his new position, John will manage the company's licensing strategy with the aim of finding new medicines to sustain the Anglo-Swedish group's growth.

Baxter Healthcare has appointed Haran Maheson as head of marketing, renal division. Reporting to the national sales and marketing director, Haran will be responsible for development of the renal division. He worked previously for Roche, where he gained over 10 years' experience in sales, sales management and marketing in the pharmaceutical industry.

Acambis chief scientific officer and executive director, Dr Thomas Monath is set to retire on June 23. Dr Monath will then serve as a non-executive director of the company until September 1, after which he will provide advice to Acambis on its smallpox and ChimeriVax vaccines. He has been with Acambis and its predecessor companies for over 14 years; he was appointed CSO and a member of the board in 2002.

AstraZeneca (AZ) has named Natalie Bickford as human resources director. Natalie will sit on the board and report directly to the marketing company president, Chris Brinsmead. Prior to joining AZ's marketing arm, Natalie was HR director and board member at Kingfisher, Trade Depot, a new business set up to service the trade sector.

SkyePharma has appointed chief operating officer, Dr Ken Cunningham, as a director of the firm. He was previously chief executive at Arakis, before joining SkyePharma in April.

Synexus has appointed Dominic Clavell to the role of international operations director, with responsibility for the management and operation of all the firm's research centres in the UK, Eastern Europe and India. He joins from Novartis where he was head of UK clinical research operations.

Penny Whitecross has been named head of healthcare for Ruder Finn UK. Formerly client services director at the consultancy, she will report to London managing director, John Preston, and will take over from Pat Pearson, who will be focusing on emerging technologies and new media across Europe.

Chandler Chicco Agency has announced five new appointments; Victoria Amos joins from Weber Shandwick healthcare with 10 years of healthcare communications experience across OTC and ethical accounts; Mel Eldrich joins with six years of healthcare PR experience from Ozone and Hill & Knowlton; Lauren O'Brien joins with over three years' experience in consumer health, having worked at Cohn & Wolfe in Geneva managing global PR projects; Isabel Ward joins from Good Relations Healthcare where she managed nutrition and healthcare accounts and Sarah Giles joins from the John Innes Centre for Plant and Microbial Research.

ScopeMedical has hired Sarah Hogg as account manager and Karen Wade as senior account executive. Sarah was previously at Schering Healthcare for six years as scientific advisor and scientific liaison manager. Karen began her career as clinical data scientist for Glaxo Wellcome. More recently she was sourcing manager for Pfizer.

Hill & Knowlton's med ed arm, Medical Knowledge Group, has made three new appointments; David Noble, previously commercial director at PPD, is named as managing director; Antoinette Shallue joins as business development director and Alison McTavish joins as senior medical writer.

RightAngle Learning has appointed Sarah Taylor as an account director. She has over seven years' experience in healthcare communications and media relations, and joins from Wyeth where she was communications manager in the corporate affairs department.

Abby Wood has joined STAR Medical as consultant for the North West region. She was previously a medical representative with MSD for just under two years.

Virgo Health PR has hired Ondine Hassen as account manager and Charlotte Nock as junior account executive. Ondine was previously science media officer at the charity, Breast Cancer Campaign. She will be working on the global PR programme for Roche and GSK's Bonviva. Charlotte joins from the Welsh Assembly Government where she spent two years working in health promotion and international business. She will be working on GSK's Cervarix and Boehringer Ingelheim's Micardis.

McCann Erickson has hired David Donaghue to head up its healthcare operation. David held a number of senior roles at the agency between 1992 and 2002. He joins from Cheetham Bell JWT where he was head of healthcare running clients including, Reckitt Benckiser, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly.

Alex Sharp has been named business development and sales manager at design agency, The Foundry. Alex has previously worked at the Marketing Innovation Group in Manchester, a digital direct marketing company.

Succinct Communications has hired Abbie Pound as senior medical writer and Helen Jervis as an account manager. Abbie joins from The Lancet where she was senior editor. Helen's background is pharma R&D where she was involved in applications, marketing and business development for advanced scientific instrumentation.

Shire Health London (SHL) has made four promotions: Melissa Millard moves from programme leader to associate director following nearly three years at SHL; Fiona Robertson moves to account director, while Karen Crum and Tara Lanigan have been promoted to account managers.

Brand(x) has appointed Steve Wynne as medical education account manager and Rachel Bilson as account director. Steve was most recently account manager at Medicus International and has experience in international healthcare, government PR and consumer marketing. Rachel joins from Lane Earl Cox Advertising where she was senior account manager.

Ipsos MORI has announced the appointment of Richard Habis as business development director, and Karen Swords as director within the healthcare division.

Precision Direct Marketing has hired two new senior staff; Mike Gale joins as marketing director and Alison Sime joins as production director. Mike is the immediate past chairman of the PM Society. Alison began her career with Freemans, the catalogue company.

Woolley Pau has hired Kelly Scratcher as account manager. Kelly joins from Medicus London where she worked as account manager across a range of ethical brands. She will be working on a number of the agency's key ethical accounts.

The publishing group, Medendium has hired two new staff: Valerie Benfield joins as marketing manager. She will work with the management team in developing business. May-Lin Ang joins as editorial assistant to work on Guidelines in Practice and Connectmedical med ed initiatives.

The Remedy, the med ed division of Fleishman-Hillard, has appointed three new staff members. Stephanie Bond joins as account manager from Burson-Marsteller where she worked for 18 months on a number of international and national pharma accounts. Gemma Tinsdale joins as account executive, having originally trained and worked as a pharmacist, while Hayley Fitzpatrick joins the agency as assistant account executive specialising in administrative and financial support to The Remedy's account teams.

Edelman Health has made eight new appointments; Vicky Lygoe joins from Hill & Knowlton as senior account executive; Charlotte King joins as assistant account executive after working as a medical sales rep for Wyeth before moving into healthcare PR; Zoe Fleming has been promoted to senior account manager; Nicola Hayter joins the agency as an assistant account executive; Anthea Morris joins as a senior account manager from Resolute ; Cheryl Pitcher joins from Interaction as an account manager; Sadie White joins as an account manager from Nexus Healthcare Communications and Alex Prior joins from Munro & Forster as an account executive.
