GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced plans to fund two academic fellowships at Stamford University in the US to honour former chief executive officer (CEO), Jean-Pierre Garnier, who stepped down on May 21.

The Stamford Graduate School of Business stands to benefit from $500,000 of GSK funding which will be used to create two fellowships aimed at promoting business education for its highest achieving students.

Chairman of GSK, Sir Christopher Gent, praised Garnier for his inspirational leadership of the company and explained that it is important for the firm to play a vital role in developing future business leaders. Garnier was CEO of the company since its creation in 2001

"We believe that business should also invest in something less tangible, less quantifiable, but of equal importance - building its reputation with the society it serves," said Gent.

Students pursuing an MBA will be eligible for support from the JP and Danyele Garnier Fellowship Fund being backed by $350,000 of GSK's total funding. The business school will underwrite the tuition fees of candidates they feel to be the most deserving of a fellowship.

The remaining $150,000 will go towards setting up the JP and Danyele Garnier Fellowship Fund for the Graduate School of Business Summer Institute in Entrepreneurship Program. It provides non-business students the opportunity to undertake a four-week course designed to give them grounding in the fundamentals of finance, marketing and accounting.

Robert Joss, dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, said: "The fellowships being established in his honour ensure that Jean-Pierre Garnier will continue to have an impact on shaping the next generation of principled, innovative and insightful business leaders."
