Modernising the Mental Health Act: Published Today

December 6, 2018 | mental health

The final report of the Independent Review of the Mental Health Act 1983 has been published today, 6th December 2018.

The final report of the independent review of the Mental Health Act 1983 ‘Modernising the Mental Health Act’ has been published. The act surrounds detaining and treating people with mental health difficulties in hospitals, with close examination of methods used to increase levels of choice and reduce compulsion.

The report focuses on restoring dignity to people and to the system, directly relating to service users’ experiences of the process of being detained. Around 150 recommendations for change in the comprehensive report were made, with key principles contributing to the overarching values to guide care and treatment.

The director of Mednet Group, Miranda Stead, has responded to the report published today:

“Maintaining dignity is extremely important to maintaining health improvements to people with mental health difficulties. Giving patients a voice when considering their treatment options is something we care about deeply. The patient needs to be the focus of treatment solutions.

The recommendation’s surrounding the importance of advance choices and the opportunity for advocacy for those who may find it difficult to let their preferences be known is something we support wholeheartedly. Understanding and cooperative treatment plans will improve the efficacy of administration to those with mental health difficulties.

We fully support the Modernising
of the Mental Health Act 1983, giving patients better control and more say in treatment decisions. While there is still room for improvement this report gives a positive vision for future of approaches to mental health.”
