A Lucid Group Thirsty Thursday: change management and self-efficacy

Last week, Lucid Group were lucky enough to have Richard Nugent, Founder and Managing Director of TwentyOne Leadership, present a session on change management and self-efficacy. Richard often works with fast-paced organisations to build leadership capability, develop talent and lead change. The session was packed with useful tools and insights into how to better manage, as well as adapt to, changes made due to all the external noise and disruption we have been experiencing since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Richard commented, “There is a stark difference right now between those organisations who are genuinely looking after the wellbeing of their people as challenges of 2020 continue, and those who aren’t. Lucid is a shining example of a company finding new and innovative ways to ensure their people continue to perform and thrive during the current climate and are ready for the even more positive and exciting opportunities that 2021 will bring. I am delighted to support them in doing this.”

The session kick-started with a useful discussion about the three things we all need during times of change: a sense of certainty, a sense of direction and a sense of empowerment. A great example of how individuals can achieve a sense of certainty is to either keep to routines or build in a routine during times of change, as this can help you to maintain focus and provide reassurance. However, it was also highlighted that you need to make sure that the routine does not dictate your day as this can actually have an adverse effect on your mental wellbeing and add to stress and anxiety.

For teams and organisations, creating and maintaining a vision for everyone to unite behind is also a practical example of how you can create a sense of direction. For Lucid, this is something that has recently been focussed on by individual teams as well as at a Group level via its recent virtual event, ‘Altogether More Magic’. This event focused on its culture and values; and, in particular, the shared purpose, vision and mission of both the Group and how this aligns to each of its teams.

Richard closed the session by focussing on the importance of self-efficacy and how research has shown that if we can focus on developing self-efficacy through times of change you will be more able to develop and manage change. Self-efficacy is the fundamental belief that we can learn, grow and develop and, in educational environments, can be the best predictor of how well a child will do in future challenges. If you know you can learn, grow and develop through periods of change, then you will be better equipped to deal and manage your own wellbeing and situations when challenges and changes come along. Self-efficacy is something we are all born with and to hone the skill it is more about reconnecting with it and one of the best ways to do this is to teach yourself something new.
