OPEN Health Graduate Programme: from OPEN VIE to OPEN Health Medical Communications

December 6, 2019 |

Isobel Owens shares her experience of the OPEN Health Graduate Programme from OPEN VIE to OPEN Health Medical Communications

Having recently started the final leg of the OPEN Health Graduate Programme, getting to grips with the world of medical communications has been an exciting challenge. Before rotating into this practice, I spent the first year of the scheme working with OPEN Value, Informatics & Evidence (OPEN VIE), completing a 6-month rotation in market access followed by real-world evidence.

Getting to experience two disciplines within OPEN VIE was a great opportunity to see how well both complement each other and how important real-world evidence is when demonstrating the value of medicines. During my time in the market access division, I used real-world evidence to inform the materials I created, then in the real-world evidence division I became familiar with how these studies were carried out and wrote some publications myself!  During my time at OPEN VIE I’ve got to know some great people and gained a wide variety of skills including account handling, medical writing, business development and data analysis.

I was sad to say goodbye to my OPEN VIE colleagues, but I am excited to learn more about the other disciplines within OPEN Health. Moving into medical communications has allowed me to hone the skills I developed in OPEN VIE, while also gaining new skills through the organisation of medical education events. During my first week, I attended an educational meeting for dermatology nurses, and I am currently preparing for a debate at the American Academy of Dermatology 2020 conference. I was immediately made to feel part of the team and already have attended a team meeting followed by drinks in London; it was a great opportunity to meet everyone properly and have some fun outside of the office!

With only a few months of the scheme remaining, I am looking forward to utilising the skills I have gained in the next chapter of my career at OPEN Health. I now have a broad range of experience and connections across the group and have worked across a range of projects and therapy areas including neurology, oncology, ophthalmology and dermatology. This unique experience and knowledge I have acquired is something I never would have gained if not for the graduate scheme. I would recommend the programme to anyone who loves to learn and get stuck into something new.
