State of the Nations – Mapping the impact and burden of lung cancer in the devolved nations

by MHP Communications with Lynsey Conway Communications for United Kingdom Lung Cancer Coalition

Summary of work

Lung cancer is one of the biggest killers in the UK today. However, despite its impact in the UK as a whole, efforts to raise awareness and champion policy change are often heavily England-focused. The UKLCC’s aim was to bring lung cancer out of the political, clinical and media shadow within the devolved nations in order to demonstrate how Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are falling behind their European counterparts.

The UKLCC launched the ‘State of the Nations’ infographics and briefings. Through a targeted media launch and using new analysis of readily available public data, the infographics and briefings achieved real cut-through in demonstrating the significant impact of lung cancer in the devolved nations. Presenting these findings in a compelling way, creating tailored calls to action and having a targeted engagement strategy, helped to raise awareness of these issues among wider political, policy and media audiences in the devolved nations and created impetus for meaningful change.

The infographics and briefings received extensive coverage in key media outlets, secured multiple meetings between senior UKLCC representatives and key stakeholders, mobilised political advocates and, importantly, affirmed the UKLCC as the leading campaigning organisation representing the needs and interests of lung cancer patients.
