Genetic Alliance UK

Summary of work

With over 6,000 known rare conditions affecting 3.5 million people in the UK, and an estimated 6,000 children born every year with undiagnosed genetic conditions - Genetic Alliance UK has had to overcome tremendous challenges to bring patients, their families and carers together.

The charity hosts numerous events to engage relevant stakeholders and to raise awareness of these conditions; to bring to light the issues that millions of people face every year.

Genetic Alliance UK has galvanised political support across the UK for rare, genetic and undiagnosed conditions which culminated in the launch of an All-Party Parliamentary Group with the support of almost 40 parliamentarians.

Through their innovative use of social media they have amassed tens of thousands of stakeholders with an interest in rare, genetic and undiagnosed conditions including patients and families affected by these conditions. One Twitter campaign reached over 1 million people in one day and was described in parliament as ‘historic’.

Genetic Alliance UK has provided support to isolated families: they have provided a lifeline.

Judges' comments

Genetic Alliance UK has undertaken a good range of work, with clear objectives and strong evidence of success. They’ve achieved an impressive amount without a full-time team and, in an unsexy area, they’ve gone at it with energy and gusto.
