25 by 25 - Setting an Ambitious New Goal in Lung Cancer Survival

by MHP Communications and Lynsey Conway Communications for United Kingdom Lung Cancer Coalition

Summary of work

The United Kingdom Lung Cancer Coalition (UKLCC) was founded in 2005 as a means of bringing together a once disparate lung cancer community to raise public and policymaker awareness about key issues with a united voice. The UKLCC is formed of senior clinicians, national cancer patient groups and industry representatives.
Although five-year lung cancer survival rates have improved in the UK - up from 9% in 2005 to 16% at their highest today - the pace of change and improvement in services and delivery of care has remained slow, with significant variation in quality of care across the UK.
As such, in 2016 the UKLCC decided to set a new ambition to see five-year survival rates rise to 25% by 2025. To inform an implementation strategy of the ambition for each UK nation, the UKLCC conducted extensive surveys of HCPs and patients/carers, as well as a separate poll of over 1,000 GPs, in order to understand the attitudes of these groups towards improvement of five-year survival rates.
Through the resulting ‘25 by 25’ implementation report, the UKLCC has secured support in all four UK nations from leading politicians and policymakers for achieving the ‘25 by 25’ ambition and delivering the UKLCC’s recommendations.

Judges’ comments

This was an ambitious, clear, targeted campaign with good outcomes.. They critically secured strong clinical advocacy and policymaker support to challenge the status quo. A brilliant programme that clearly achieved their goals.
